Should we feel that we have to replace famous TV/Movie male characters with women?

"Some of the most famous TV characters are now transitioning from male to female actors. Should we be looking to introduce these characters as females because of today's gender equality and it is wrong to stereotype a character to a specific gender. Or, should these characters remain male as they were originally created. Or, is it irrelevant if a character is played by a male or female actor. ".
